Or any other company. They charge a few hundred dollars in fees, I'm wondering if the homeowners list their properties elsewhere without the charges for airbnb. Any ideas where to look?

In my experience, rental homes are often listen on multiple sites, so if you know the property address or name, you can try to find it somewhere else where the fees are less. But most owners don't want the hassle of renting directly, and going through the website also gives you protection in case of problems with the rental and allows you to read reviews of previous guests, so I wouldn't count on bypassing the fees altogether. If you find something that looks too good to be true, be wary of scams.
