Does a sad face emoji make light of a situation?

Later, I was talking with a friend, who said I should have omitted the emoji.

Ps. The person I was texting with regularly uses emojis in her replies.

I use emojis in text often to express how I feel since it’s hard to understand a person just by reading their text without seeing their face. I like when others do too. I see nothing wrong with yours. What

Yea I guess people can interpret it negatively. Something I only learnt today. In your case, it helps that the person also always uses emojis so you’re really safe.

When I started texting many years ago I used to cringe when I got replies from proffessional people with an emoji or a text language like;
Srsly
Lol
Rly
Ttyl
Tysm

I thought it was completely unacceptable.

Things are so different today. Not that I like it but it is what it is.

Depends on who you're texting and the seriousness of the thing you're sad about. Sad bc someone is feeling sick? Fine use an emoji. Sad because someone passed away? No emoji. That's my opinion, maybe it's different for different generations too. (I'm Gen X)

I actually don’t think I ever saw an email with an emoji. I guess because professional talk doesn’t belong with any emotions at all. It’s all about business.
Friendly texts which is instead of a call makes sense to show the emoji matching your feeling!

Not at all. Your meaning was quite clear without the emoji, but the emoji simply emphasizes it. I don't know why your friend would make such a statement.

Now if you had texted "On, no, I just found out Justin Bieber is married, there went my last hope Crying

" that would have been different.

Texting English is a new language. Miscommunication happens bc not everyone speaks it and translations don't always work

Text speak and emojis are not necessarily the same.
Emojis simply illustrate what youre texting, and often help bring the point across stronger.
Definitely appropriate to use, does not make light of the situation.
OP, the friend who told you this-does she text/whatsapp frequently? Sounds like shes just a bit out of the loop

I totally agree with your first part. I do use emojis because I feel it helps with ‘tone of voice’. Text speak is something I try to avoid as much as possible.
