my baby is 10 days old and is barely awake between feedings. when he's awake, he's wide eyed and very awake, but in a matter of minutes he's asleep again.
normal?

Is he eating enough and having plenty of wet and dirty diapers? That's crucial.

Newborns definitely sleep a lot. But as the poster above said, is baby eating enough? Is baby having 10-12 wet diapers a day? If you have ANY concerns at all, please check with your pediatrician.

It could also be baby is getting ready for a growth spurt. If I remember correctly newborns often have a growth spurt at about 10 days. But like I said before, please check with your pediatrician if you have any concerns at all.

do people really change their babies 12 times a day??
every time I check, it's wet, and 2 + dirty diapers too
if anything it seems like he's eating too much!
(bottle fed so I know what's going in)

The growth spurts are 3 and 6.
3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3months and 6 months. Just before they eat and sleep more.

Yes. Newborns go through a lot of diapers

Not a dozen a day, though. If the urine color is not dark, and doesn't smell strongly, he's probably fine.

Sure babies sleep whilst they eat. Very normal.

Take advantage of this time OP and rest up! I hope your baby continues to let you rest, but my babies would become more cranky after 2 weeks old.

This! If baby is yellow plz check him out. Jaundice can cause sleepiness. Btdt!

I was told that as a result of the epidural, the baby still has some of it in his system and will be sleepy.

Call pediatrician. This can be a red flag! What do you have to lose by calling? However if you don’t call you can put your baby at risk. I’ve had doctors yell at me for this. Jaundice especially - and you can’t always see it with th naked eye!

I cannot believe most of these replies!! Of course newborns sleep a lot! That's what they're supposed to do!!
The bigger concern is if they're not sleeping enough - my pediatrician is way more concerned about sleeping than eating/weight gain.

I had this with my second baby. My first cried seemingly non-stop for months and my second one just slept and slept! I was so nervous! But it just lasted a couple of weeks and then he became a very active baby. So, yes, check to make sure that he’s eating well and then relax.
