I actually made a really good stew in the crockpot this past shabbos. I sauteed 1 chopped onion in spices in a pan and then I added lots of chunks of cubed meat (I used cut up flanken and minute steaks, probably about 3-4 pounds) and browned
that in a lot of different spices (lots of paprika). I put all the meat and drippings in a crockpot and then sauteed three more sliced onions and two cloves garlic in the same pan with spices and added it to the crockpot.
Then I added about 6/7 cubed golden potatoes, some more spices on top and salt, pepper and some non msg consomme mix. I covered it with water and cooked it on high for one hour and them turned it to low.
It came out really really good and it was even really good reheated as leftovers!
