Were you born with hearing challenges or did it happen later in life?

Are you comfortable telling people if you can't understand them? Are groups more difficult? How can people make socialising easier for you?

Also - have you ever ended an argument by turning off your hearing aid? I would definitely have done that when I was a teen, if I could. Smile

My mum says she noticed the signs that I just wasn’t listening from when I was old enough to understand (probably like 1-2years). If she would call me from another room I would not go to her.

I was diagnosed with mild to moderate hearing loss at age 3.

I was also born 1 pound 9 oz at 25 weeks gestation...and I think that played a part in it too, but I don’t know. We’ll never know.

My mother always taught me to always ask someone to repeat themselves even though it feels like I would’ve looked stupid or dumb in their eyes. She ingrained into my head that it’s better to know what they’re saying than to make a mistake of saying the wrong thing.

I don’t have a problem asking people to repeat themselves.

Groups ARE difficult! Especially when there’s more than one person speaking. I may have an attention thing but when that happens I get very overwhelmed and I clam up lol like my ears don’t know what to process and I don’t know who to listen to. That is the only bit that’s hard for me to this day
People talk over each other and I just sit there smiling awkwardly and staying quiet haha.

How can they make it easier?

Eh. I just tell them I have hearing issues and I’d appreciate if they spoke a tad bit louder than usual. I’m working on getting hearing aids through a new health insurance I applied for this year and hopefully it will help tons. It did when I was a kid. Smile

How do you hear people when they're wearing masks?
My hearing is good but when someone has a mask on, I hear nothing. Never realized how much I rely on seeing a person's mouth speaking. I guess I should get my hearing checked.

I struggle so so much to hear them. It sounds very muffled. I get embarrassed asking them to repeat themselves for like the 3rd and 4th time since at that point the person speaking might think I’m dumb or something. Then I tell them I have hearing issues and right away that annoyed look goes away.

the way I hear, to you normal hearing people, it sounds the closest equivalent to this.

Cup your hands over your ears and have someone speak to you from across the room.

People have different levels of hearing loss though.

Thanks Smile
I was born in 1996... and people tell me that all the time. I guess now babies born this young have more chances of surviving than in 1996... BH for medical technology!!!

I’m working on getting them

The hearing aids I did have broke over 3 years ago and I contacted audiology central and they told me they only take United health care or empire blue cross blue shield for hearings aids and I just am about to get the empire bcbs insurance in the mail any day now.

Hopefully it works out

Is a hearing loss considered a booboo in shidduchim? It shouldn't be but was it for you? Did you have to compromise

I don’t think I went through the shiduch system when I met my husband lol.

We actually met on Shabbat.com and he asked me out and we went on 3 dates that lasted between 4-5 hours every Tuesday of that month

But yep! I told him right away I had hearing problems and my now husband said “it’s not so bad.”
