Electric scooter for 13 year old

My son is begging us to buy him an electric scooter.
Im terrified of them because I feel they are not safe.
I live in bklyn NY and I c all the time kids riding these machines.... they can go as fast as 12 mph and I feel that kids are not responsible enough to follow traffic rules at age13....
My son claims that all his friends are riding these scooters to school.
If ur son is riding an electric scooter to school can u share ur opinions or thoughts on its safety for a 13 year old in bklyn?
Its so hard saying no when ur kid tells u that “everyone has it”...,,,
Generally my son walks to school and he is convincing us that he needs it to get to school on time.
On the other hand I am paranoid.
Plz advise.

My son has it. He’s 11and loves it. Alot of boys are getting it now - even though it’s quite expensive!
Our school made a rule that they don’t allow anyone to ride them there.
When it’s nice weather he rides it outside when he comes home from school. We’ll being it up to the country where he’ll be able to ride it freely.
I don’t live in brooklyn - but definitely understand your concern with so many people on the sidewalk!
