When you're you're rich, you're pretty and clever and can sing well, too.

I don't know so much about life lessons, I just like the pithiness of the expressions.

Es hot geholfen vee a teit in bankes: It helped like cupping a corpse.
sorry, correction: vee ah toiteh bankes. toiteh is corpse in Yiddish

A khisoron di kallah is tzu shein: A defect, the bride is too pretty.
Vos men leigt arain, nemt men aroys: You get out what you put in.
A krankn fregt men, a gezuntn git men: a sick person you ask if he wants food; a healthy person you serve without asking if he wants
In beis harov, kent di meshoresteh paskenen shailes: in the rabbi's house, the Gentile housemaid knows how to answer questions on Jewish law
Az me muz, muz men: when you have to, you have to.
A nekhtiger tog: literally, a nightly day, iow 'ha! fat chance!no way!'
A mensh trakht, G-tt lakht: man proposes, G-d disposes (literally a man thinks, G-d laughs)

just FYI, the words that have kh in them, like khisoron, nekhtiger, trakht, lakht, is actually pronounced like "ch" in the name Yocheved.

Don't tell hashem how big your problems are, tell your problems how big hashem is.

This one is how they say in Yiddish - moirahdik!!!

No, thats exactly why for a fool you should not show 'half of the work' because he'll ask questions as if its finished.

I also know that proverb with the word "nisht", and for the reason "Sprinkles1" wrote above. Also b/c show a foolish person a job half done, he'll be critical of what is lacking. And why is it lacking? B/c the job isn't yet completed. But, the fool doesn't think of that.

אז מען גייט שלאפן ווי א איד, שטייט מען אויף ווי א איד

If you go to sleep like a Yid, you will wake up like a Yid

loose meaning: if one says Shema in the proper way, prepares negel-vasser... things a Yid does before going to bed, then one will wake up "on the right foot" like a Yid - say Modeh Ani, recite bachos, daven, do mitzvos/chessed, have Jewish thoughts... - do things a Yid does.

This one speaks to me very much.

Men Ken nisht tantzen by tzvei chasunos.

You can't dance at 2 weddings at once.
You can't be in two places at the same time.

I love this thread.

Kenst nisht lernen an alta ber tantzen

You can't teach an old bear dancing

When one thinks they're too old to learn something new they'll often say the above.

I can't believe nobody said
אויפן גנב ברענט דאס היטל!
Unless someone did say it and I didn't see it....
I don't even know how to say it in English Very Happy. Loosely translated, the person who you think did it probably did because it's that obvious!

There are so many good expressions that loses it's קנאק once you need to translate it Laugh

On the thiefs head burns the hat hahaha

The one who did it keeps on mentioning he didn't do it, tries to help you figure out who did it etc etc

I agree with losing its knak when translated... Like when you need to explain a joke to someone

'A fayahrigen shnei' -
last year's snow (something that once was a big deal but means nothing now, there's nothing left of it

'Brent zich oif haisen, blust men oif kalten'-
If you burn yourself on something hot, you blow on something cold.

'Bei di naar iz di nevuah' -
By the fool is the nevuah.

'Ales in ainem iz nisht da ba keinem' -
Every (good) thing in one doesn't exist in anyone - no one (or nothing) is perfect

ETA- I always understood 'a toiteh bankes' to mean that the 'bankes', the cups, are 'dead' - meaning cold, useless.

ער האט פוטער אופ'ן קאפ
Er hut pitter oifen kup.

Similar to oifen ganev brent dus hittel.

He is acting suspicious because he must be guilty.

Reminds me of a fable we read in school, someone stole a tub of butter from the grocery.
The owner held him up, by inviting him to sit & relax at his fireplace until the butter started melting & drip down from under his hat onto his forehead....
