If you are a business owner, do you give maaser on sales or profits?

Self-employed.

I do somewhere in the middle. Some expenses get subtracted right away, but others which come later I don't always subtract when I make the maaser calculation. So for example if a credit card payment comes through, I'll mark down the amount I actually get (which subtracts the fees automatically). But I won't necessarily subtract the cost of paper or postage. Large expenses I usually do exclude.

I figure if I overpaid Hashem will pay me back, and anyhow I know I wasn't always careful with maaser and hopefully this will make up for it.

I personally keep a running calculation, and as money comes in I mark it down and the total maaser due updates. I try to make sure I'm not behind in maaser at all. If I know a check is coming in I'll give the maaser on it up front.

Thanks! I’m assuming you provide a service so it might be a little easier. For me I am selling a product so my sales is really not a reflection of what goes into my pocket- I was planning on giving maaser after my cost and other related expenses are deducted.

After subtracting the cost of goods sold. Speak with a dayan if you’re not sure.

I do provide a service, but I'd still do the same.

Sample maaser worksheet:

-$5000 //120 shirts
-$300 //packaging
-$2500 //rent
$3120.50 //income week Jan 6
$4502.25 //income week Jan 13
-$200 //electric bill
$9250.00 //income week Jan 20
$4913.75 //income week Jan 27
-----------
income = sum ($13,786.50)

maaser = 10% of income ($1,378.65)

After our costs.
Dh has service based business that also includes selling product.
Service takes full ma’aser
On sale of items takes ma’aser on profit of item.

Why? Service can also deduct costs.

Like what? Car depreciation? Gas? Equipment purchase? Some yes. Some not.
Employee salaries yes we do deduct.
It gets complicated. Dh uses quick books and tries to track ma’aser from his business there too. (It helps for taxes also). So seeing it there helps figure it out better.
