It’s all what you’re used to, to me supper sounds formal/antiquated. 😌

I’m wondering if any other Americans say supper these days besides frum ppl.

I do too. We set the table officially with dishes and settings etc. But theyre not very pretty or formal.
So its just "supper".
Like blah lol.
I want to get a really pretty set of stoneware and nicer glasses. And a nice set of matching placemats, and maybe a nicer water pitcher...like when I go put to eat...to give it a more dinner like ambiance. And call it properly, dinner. Lol

My husband and I call it dinner and my kids all say supper. They totally learned it from friends and are quite mortified if their friends hear us say dinner! It's a become a big joke in our house.

I grew up in New England and my husband is a BT, so it makes sense that we say dinner. We do use real dishes and eat together every night, but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

So this is what I found online.

Supper is night meal. While Dinner is the main meal. Dinner used to be served midday with Supper being served at night as a light snack. Today in the U.S. we have lunch during the day and in the 1900's the term Dinner started picking up for the evening meal, replacing the word supper.

FFB native OOTer now living in-town (wow that's a lot of labels).
We always said "dinner" growing up, and I still call it dinner. My kids occasionally say supper but it drives me crazy (like the other in-town-isms, like "briefcase"). I was very happy to see the new Dinner Done cookbook LOL

This is so funny because my parents call it supper (mom super American and dad grew up chassidish) and my husband and I call it dinner. Whenever my parents say supper to my daughter, she always comments on it like “we call it dinner!”
