I am in the year and wondering what people do, about sending and getting mm when they are in the year.

You give to one person in order to fulfill the mitzva, but not more than that.
You should not receive any, but if people give you, you don't embarrass them by rejecting it. If there is a suitable occasion before Purim you can comment that of course you won't be giving or expecting to receive anything this year because of aveilus.
I was single at the time, but something given 'from our family to your family' may be in a different category, since it is not an individual gift.
