I had to give my baby vitamin d when dc was a newborn because of a very low level. Specialist told me then it's a good idea as a general rule to give all kids newborns too vitamin d. My baby needed 5000 but for newborn and infants 1000 a day is enough.

I formula feed. With my first I didn’t but my second was a preemie and his daily formula oz the first 4 months of life weren’t enough so Ped recommended vitamin D.

I never did, I instead supplemented my own diet with more vitamin d and took a vitamin d pill along w/ my postnatal pill. Look up La Leche League on vitamin d in newborns.
Also you can ask your ped how much sun exposure your baby can have. We get vitamin d from the sun so a short walk w/ baby will help them produce their own vitamin d. The worry is that the baby will get too much sun. But like a 10 min walk should be fine. Double check w your ped

Doc recommended starting at 6 weeks but we started supplementing with formula at that point so didn’t do it very long. We did begin when she started declining formula at around 8 months.
