anyone have a good answer why we actually have 2 types of bitter herbs (the maror and chazeret)? ive never really understood why and there's no good explanation on the 'net either. lots of debate about what counts as maror and chazeret. but why two?

They are allowed to be the same type.
There are two so to symbolize there is enough for maror and korech.

do you have a source? I could be wrong, but I'm not persuaded by 'symbolize that there's enough...' -- I'd be more persuaded by something like to represent that maror is used for two distinct steps in the seder???

It says this in my hagada as well.
It's not a chok. We use maror twice.

My in laws actually put a whole piece of the white thing as maror, and the grated one as chazeret and in the sandwich.
My parents only eat the lettuce but buy the white one for the kaarah.

It's true we use maror twice, but the reason for leaves and horseradish is that many Jews didn't have access to real maror - endives, romaine lettuce, etc - and had to suffice with horseradish. So it made its way into the seder plate.

Except that sepharadim use just romaine for both chazeret and maror and still have 2 distinct spots on the kearah
