Why not a psychologist and therapy? Wouldn't you prefer someone that studied and trained to treat your kid?

I dont live in brooklyn, but I would encourage you to search for a coach and search some more. My adhd son went for years for therapy with no end in sight for all his issues. Within a few sessions with his coach, he is a different person. He finally has hope, and clear goals. Therapy was too abstract, while the coach's approach is very down to earth and realistic. He no longer sees himself as not normal, but as a normal kid with manageable issues.

It is not a wrong idea. I have a coach right now, I call her coach because the Dutch name of her profession is ''mentor'' and I don't need to have a mentor so she is my coach.
Difference with therapy is that in therapy you change behaviour. As in, if you got a low self esteem due ADHD a therapist changes that.
But a therapist can't help you with tasks like how to plan homework, household task, how to have overview with things and the like.

It's a totally different type of treatment. Psychologists train to deal with emotional issues. Coaching helps people find effective ways of managing their ADHD.

If someone needs practical help with their ADHD, therapy is unlikely to help.

It's like the difference between a food scientist and a nutritionist, or an electrical engineer and an electrician... More years of education don't always make a person more suited to the immediate, practical problem at hand.

I don't think OP is in Israel, but just wanted to point out for parents who are that for younger kids, ADHD coaching is available through hitpatchut hayeled and is heavily subsidized.

There are some subsidized options for older kids as well (ages 10-12 and possibly beyond), usually in connection with schools.

Does anyone know if they do virtual sessions? Such an interesting idea! How would a very strong willed teen take to this?
