Is it necessary to go to dermatologist? How do I know what type of skin she has?
Can anyone recommend a gentle/mild starter routine with specific brands /products as I don't know if I will realistically get to the dermatologist any time soon?

Does she have problem skin - like acne. Most teens don't go to a dermatologist unless they have acne.
If she has acne, the Proactive line is very popular and is effective. If that doesn't work or she has cystic acne, you really should go to a dermatologist because they have prescription medication that really works. It is terrible for a teen to have acne and it is even worse when bad acne causes scarring which can be avoided.
Of course she should wear STRONG sunscreen all the time as the majority of wrinkles are caused by exposure to the sun. This is true even if she isn't deliberately basking in the sun but just walking around. She will thank you when she is 30 and doesn't have the lines that are starting on her friends who didn't faithfully use sunscreen.
