I'm fed up with my autistic daughter's special needs school
They are always hunting for more ways to make money that involve pvt insurances and self direction and god knows what. I mean they do make around 120, 000 per kid per year, so go figure... also fed up with this whole court and lawyer situation. Honestly I think this whole private school situation is over rated. It's a good school and I'm happy with it but not thrilled. My child is verbal but basically always in her own world. Calm not wild.. would a bi-y school be good for her? She has a 6:1:1 placment and does need the 1:1 support.(plus has medical conditions associated with autism) Calling all moms with children of moderate to severe autism or other special needs. Where do you send your kids? And did you ever consider taking a doe placment?

I don’t know your daughter, so I can’t tell you if bi-y would be a good fit. But I can tell you a little about the program. The teachers are extremely professional and warm. The students feel like they are part of a family. Most of the children there have Down Syndrome. I am not sure how many children, if any, have autism. I haven’t worked there in many years and I know there have been changes made since I was there but it is definitely a place to check out.

Do you know who will be her teacher? It really depends on which bi-y and who the classroom teachers are. Some are very impressive, big spacious and accommodating to the children’s needs other sights are not as great.
The NEST program is fantastic for a high functioning student.
Have you tried Tiferes Mordechai? They have a range of levels and types of children...
Hope you find the best place for your daughter, Hatzlocha!

What about Horizon? That’s similar to Nest, but they take lower functioning kids.

Keep in mind that now with covid public schools keep closing every other week. It’s very difficult.

It's not a specific school. Its specialized classes geared for children with autism in some community public schools. Horizon classes have 8 students. Certain criteria have to be met in order for your child to be considered for acceptance. It's a great program its run by autism professionals from nyu.

The Rebecca school
Imagine academy
Tiferes Mordechai
Yad yisroel

They are all excellent schools.
You will know if the school Is right if you go down to visit each one. Also with covid alot of public schools are closed often and. That's really really difficult

I have a child in a bi-y program. It really depends on the teacher and therapist in that particular classroom. I changed from a private school because I was fed up and not happy with the progress. The strict aba program in her school wasn't working. In the bi-y the teacher runs things and not the principal. I am very happy with the atmosphere in the class and the quality of the staff. The class is really small this year because people pulled out due to covid and she is thriving on all the attention. My child is more low functioning and not really autistic.

I have and I was very impressed it seemed like a good fit, but seemed like I had to run after them regarding her acceptance and all. I had to keep calling after my interview about acceptance and I got the run around

I send now to a school called masterminds it's on ocean pkwy and l. It's good and all but I'm not crazy impressed. I dont feel like getting programs that dont benefit me so a school can make even more money of my special child while I live in poverty.

Tiferes mordechai does not usually require money down, they fight the doe for funding, parents don’t give head checks

but its the same problem as the school she uses now. They make you have straight Medicaid and they bill away and don't spend a dollar if your child needs something special for them and are not that helpful and knowledgeable in getting assistive devices from insurance.

Straight Medicaid is a huge problem for me. The specialists dont really take it. Now I can have a private insurance plan tog with straight Medicaid where but still dosent help with the co payments and all.
