I remember my great grandmother crooning this little ditty:

Uzu sayp, uzu sayp
Uki neki semecake

Yeah, I'm murdering the words here- I cant speak Hungarian.

But I know it translates to something like:

This is nice, this is nice
Blonde and blue is very nice

Kapusta is Russian for cabbage.

Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language unconnected to any other except Estonian and Finnish. But I suppose Russian (and English) words have crept in.

Csinos means chic/pretty, not skinny. Which goes to tell you something...

Az a szep is a song about a girl who feels that her blue eyes are pretty but unfortunately not pretty enough for the guy she would like to have love her. It's a csardas tune.

A while back, when discussing stuffed cabbage, I was also surprised they call it kapusta, I actually checked it up and posted a link there that it is indeed called similarly in hungarian. Maybe it's a russianized hungarian etc.

I also see in one post here that a wig is paroka, in russian it's pareek. I guess some word are same/similar, although most words are way different.

When I checked about kapusta, it wasn't just russian or hungarian, some other languages too, I guess it may be one of the international words. Like banana is similar in many languages.

Some of them are. Not all words posted here are Hungarian.

Well I for one am finding this thread so interesting. My grandmother always used to say tzumi and I never knew what language it was (not that I ever thought about it lol) and she didn't speak yiddish at all, so I guess it makes sense that it's Hungarian.
And I've heard my father refer to the fish sauce as kotchinyu (sorry for my atrocious spelling!), and my grandmother used to make this cold potato, sour cream, and vinegar soup she called as ?krumplibob... and a neighbor/family friend once called me chinosh, which prompted my father to have a whole argument with her as to what it really means because I am many things but thin is not one of them lol.
And my mother says boodi for bath and I never knew where that came from either - I mean she's not that Hungarian but whatever
I'm just finding this whole discussion so fun. Also because I always thought Hungarian words were hysterical, no offense to anyone LOL

I can count up to 19 in Hungarian... Does that count?

Maybe someone here knows the words to a Hungarian (folk?) song about a cockroach (Waterbug)? that drowned in an ocean. I used to know it phonetically without quote knowing what I was saying but now when I google it the words for cockroach (or Waterbug) don't match the word I remember in the song...

I believe chinush is attractive, not skinny. At least that’s how my grandmother uses it.

Forgive the spelling...

Chulamadee - vegetable salad
rukatkrumplee - potato/sour cream/egg dish
chinush - pretty/skinny
hubbush - chubby/robust
poletchintas - blintzes
kutchefayaneki - curse (muttered when upset)
mokush - squirrel
hunjie - ant (or boogers, in our family)
boodgie - underpants
tchilar - chandelier (this might be yiddish though)
poprikash - chicken with paprika (probably means paprika, but that's what the dish is called)
goulash - beef and potato stew
eezay - thing (when the word skips your mind)

There are more... I'll update when I think of them.
