The neuro developmental at children’s specialized said to give it. The pediatrician said not to. I ended up not giving it. Now I’m wondering if I should ... the pediatrician being against it worried me though

This is so interesting.
I find a tiny dose just the job too. Like another poster wrote, a sixth of a 1 mg pill. Or even smaller.
Question. From what age do you give it? Is it ok for under 2?

Not a doctor but heavily researched melatonin in school this year plus has it suggested to me for my son as a child. There is no evidence that it is toxic, even in large doses although it can have the opposite effect in some people when the dise is too high for them.and may have other benefits.
In many cases the disease in drugstores are too high. Evidence shows that a dose of .5 mg to 3 mg is effective in adults for mitigation of jet lag. In general there is not any evidence that using it on an ongoing basis is useful.
There is no research in children because of ethics. There’s not really any proof it helps and there’s not any proof it doesn’t when used as an ongoing sleeping aid.
Setting circadian rhythms by utilizing light and dark appropriately might be helpful.

And she recommended davinci liposomal melatonin spray. She said that it helps the brain detox etc. who knows if that’s true but if she gives it to her kids with her health philosophy I would give to mine (which I do) |
That’s really not a thing. If your liver is working, it detoxifies everything

I’m sorry. The topic was melatonin as a sleep aid for children, not if it can be used clinically in massive doses 300 mg for ALS.

Melatonin levels are much more accurately controlled through light and datkness And blue light at appropriate times.

Dr shanik told me time and time again that I may not give kids under 6 ANY melatonin at any dose.
He said even if a kid is up for hours every night he does not allow is as there are zero studies for under 6 years old.
It makes me nuts but I have to trust him here if I trust him with everything else.
I would be shocked if he said differently to you as he is known to be really strict about this.

Giving 1mg melatonin is perfectly safe, but some say they have more vivid dreams the higher the dose.

When did he tell you this? He told me this a bunch of years ago (my kid is now married, lol). So maybe things changed. He said melatonin is perfectly safe and didn't add any qualifiers.

He told me this in person one week ago at my child's well visit. My child is 4. He said not before six.
Is it possible you asked about a child over 6?

DD started 1/4 mg at age 5. She was SO much happier, and our bedtime power struggles completely disappeared. I should have given it earlier, if I'd known I could.
Our ped said to give the lowest effective dose. If 1/4 doesn't work, go up to 1/2, etc. Take breaks on weekends and holidays if possible. It really depends on how much your kid needs. If taking a break means the kid is up all night and overtired, then keep a regular schedule.
DD is almost 18 now, and several years ago she tapered off on her own. Not because anyone told her to, she just felt that she'd outgrown it. She will take some the night before a big test if she's nervous, but that's pretty rare.
I wish they'd come up with really diluted drops that are safe for babies over a year old! Unregulated sleep that defies all attempts at sleep training, tantrums for hours on end, overtired crankiness, and wanting to get up and play at 3 am are not good for anyone! Growth spurts are the worst, when any established sleep routine suddenly stops working, and you have to start all over again.
I babysat an overtired 14mo last night, and she cried for an hour because she was so tired, and was fighting it so hard. She kept falling asleep, and then waking herself up after a minute or two, and then throwing a tantrum every time I took a step towards her room. She was falling asleep standing up, but she refused to give in. I felt so bad for her, and wished I had a way to help her settle down.
(She wasn't crying because she was distressed, it was definitely because she was frustrated and besides herself. I know the difference. I would have called the mom home immediately if I thought it was a problem.)

My son used to be up for hours every night and act wacky during the day. Like we almost medicated him for adhd type wacky. Super hyperactive. Started giving him melatonin as per doctor (started with half at age 7ish now need 2 at age 14)
He's a different person when he gets sleep. And yes we tried everything short of benadryl to help him sleep before the melatonin (benadryl was the next step but the melatonin worked)
There are studies that some kids diagnosed with ADHD actually are sleep deprived not Adhd.
Oh, he also hadn't grown for an entire year during the time he was barely sleeping. He's still small for his age because of that year of stalled growth but he's getting there.

Yes! My DD's teacher last year thought DD had ADHD and other diagnoses. She was just tired. She's doing wonderfully this year because she sleeps well at night.
Melochews are a lifesaver.

My doctor says it is a complete joke unless the child is on it regularly and he advises against it.

Our ped said that the side effects of lack of sleep on a developing childs brain is way worse than any potential side effects from melatonin.
