I think the problem with deliberately selecting a career path like sheitel macher, nursery school assistant or whatever when you are 18 is that you are deliberately constricting one's choices and earning potential at a time when you have the ability to get the best foundation possible so that you have multiple career opportunities available. It is an investment in one's future.
Why settle for being a low paid assistant when you can get a BA for a relatively small amount of money when you are 18 and have the time and no conflicting obligations. In NYC a public school teacher makes a fairly good income especially considering that it is still a job that is good for women with children because of the vacation schedules. The benefits are excellent and one can get graduate credits funded by the employer which raise one's salary.
There are also Federal civil service positions which might not be the most glamorous but are a good career path for someone with a BA.
Not denigrating realtors but you really need a very specific personality to succeed at that and even then it's not a steady income and might take a LONG time to build up clients. And there is lots of competition because it is a field that people WITHOUT other options try to break into.
