I've been listening to music since the day I was born, there was always music playing in our home.
My parents loved The Rabbi's Sons, D'veykus, etc and of course Uncle Moishy, Professor Green and the Simcha Machine, 613 Torah Ave. We had every "boy band" record and then tape and all the popular Jewish artists in the 80s and 90s.
But the songs that always touched me were the ones about ארץ ישראל.
Al Kol Eleh
Al Kapav Yavee
Yerushalayim Shel Zahav
and this is my favorite Ani Maamin

I love these too.
My mother used to sing 'Birchoveinu Hatzar'
when I was a little girl and had a hard time falling asleep at night.

Especially when Ofra Haza sings it her voice is so beautiful and crystal clear.

Or תשתחווי בת-שבע. These are some songs I learned as a child.[/quote]
What are the words to this song? I remember it from when I was very young but never had the words right

It's a children's activity song, a la "do the hokey pokey."
hishtachavi batsheva--walk towards your partner and curtsey or bow
hishtachavi batsheva--walk back and curtsey or bow
hishtachavi batsheva--walk towards your partner and curtsey or bow
at tihyi chavivati--spin in a circle together and return to starting place
Yad yemin batsheva (3x)--join right hands with partner
at tihyi chavivati
Yad smol batsheva (3x)--join left hands with partner
at tihyi chavivati
then shtei yadayim--join both hands
then gav el gav--do-si-do.

Your parents must be my contemporaries, more or less. That Ani Maamin was supposedly the one sung by Holocaust victims on the way to the gas chambers. It was the only Ani Maamin I knew until the Rabbis' Sons reimaged Jewish music, and to me it's not only old-old-old-OLD hat but excruciatingly dreary. Ah, well, they do say everything old is new again.

As an adult, I think Ishai Ribo's Elul תשע"ט made a huge impact on me - especially when I listened to it again several months later after the world had turned upside down.
Special mention to Uri Davidi's "Mah Sheyesh Lo" |
Yes, I was going to say the record of the mitzvah tree, lol. Not sure I remember the songs though...More the cover and we spent a lot of time listening to it.

I have no accurate memory of what my first Jewish song was, but I assume it was hamalach hagoel.
I'm dating myself, but I grew up on Journeys, Shlock Rock, Piamentas, Dveykus, Miami Boys Choir, and whoever else was popular in the 80s and 90s.

One mitzvah, brings another
And before very long
You will have
A mitzvah Tree
With roots so very strong
Now every-one
Both young and old
Can plant a mitzvah tree
So with a smile
Give it a try
Its EASY as can be

And Safam.
