Is there any device that can jam the loudspeaker/sound system at work?

(I'm only semi kidding.)

I work in an office that is trying to be corporate and Manhattan-style but has annoying loud music playing from the sound system all day. It really distracts from working. Even though many people have requested to lower the volume, they just ignore them. The work is extremely stressful/high risk and it's so hard to work this way.

I can't. Having something covering (or in) my ears is annoying, too.

Can you switch desks to somewhere farther from the loudspeaker?

It's a new office space. It's all over the place. This bothers a nice percentage of pp. (And not just sensory me.)

Never mind that all the higher-ups don't have the music playing in their rooms. It's just to block out the noise from the lowly people actually doing the work (in the open space office). So now we have people plus music. Yay.

Get a petition going, and then submit it to HR. If enough people are being annoyed, they will have to do something about it. It falls under "hostile work environment."

If there are so many employees bothered by this, you need to approach your management as a group and respectfully request that the music be turned down.

What sort of business is this that requires music to be playing so loudly all the time? Do you work in a nightclub?

Is this a customer-facing business? Do your customers enjoy this music?

I don't want to give away what kind of business this is. Customers don't really walk in. It would be ideal to turn it off completely. We never had this in our old office. But the new modern office was done as an open space office. I think they're regretting that decision. It is just not conducive to a good work environment. You just don't get the same amount of work done. In my boss's eye, he paid money for the sound system, so the music will continue to play.

Open concept offices have white noise blasting. Tell him to use his system for that.

We had smaller rooms in our old space. By general consensus, music wasn't allowed in our room. Whoever wanted to hear music had to listen on their own headphones.

Now the bosses are in control. Half the people don't mind. Half do. It makes me nuts daily. This is going on for 2 years already and I can't "get used to it". It's ridiculous.

Quit a job over the music?

At times I have considered it. But that really makes no sense.

We have both the white noise plus music going at one time. So it's like you're on an airplane, listening to music, while 50 people are talking. Wonderful.

If you don't like your work environment - and the boss won't change it - it make sense to switch jobs.
