Haha this reminds me that in 5th grade the teacher would pick a girl to choose her own vocabulary word and the class would play hangman to figure out the spelling and then try to guess the definition.
I chose the word onomatopoeia- my mother had recently told me what it means- but the teacher didn’t know the definition so she told me I need to choose a new word. I was so disappointed.

LOL I have similar memories
9th grade bio teacher claimed the word niche is pronounced NITCH (like itch) and would not believe me that she was wrong, no matter how much we argued about it.
Lost my trust in her after that

I always pronounce it "neesh". I've heard people say "nitch" or "nish", and apparently they are all correct.

Hey, don't knock the system. Graduates of MO schools, and some further to the right, can pronounce these words too. The determining factor is exposure to high level English, not your religious status.

I’m a graduate of a Bais Yaakov and I can pronounce all of these words.

I was an adult in my 20s when I found out how to pronounce Haiti and debris. Then a couple years later I learned how to pronounce Nepal. Both from listening to the current news on the radio.

My kids also read alot, and often mispronounce words, I find it cute, but I do correct them.
One time my dd was talking about ath-aysts, I asked her to tell me the meaning and realised she actually meant atheists. She said her teacher told them that word is pronounced ath-aysts, I told her that's another reason why kids these days should listen to abie rottenberg!

What about them? I don't think there is a correct pronounciation, I think it's personal prefference.

My seventh grade science teacher told us there were 109 elements. I insisted there were 111. She shut me down severely when I tried to argue.

And then the next day she came in and apologized to me in front of the class because she looked it up and I was right. (There are more now.)

The fact of coming back and acknowledging the mistake earned her major cred with the whole class.

(Anon in case any of my classmates are here. I know some of them remember it.)

Ee raan vs I ran?

ee-ran vs I ran; ee-rah-nian vs I-rain-ian
could we decide pronunciation based on personal preference?

All you need is a dollar and a dream--whoops, I mean, all you need is a dictionary. Preferably bigger than pocket size. And if you're a real word nerd, with Youtube you can find out how to pronounce it in American and in British.
