When the a/c is on at night, I keep the bedroom doors closed. How can I hear if any of the kids cry? I have a baby monitor in the baby's room, but what about the older kids? They don't usually cry, but they are only 3, 4 and 6. If they have an accident or don't feel good, they will cry.

Maybe get a cheap monitor that just does sound for their room?

Why can’t the doors stay open 1-2 inches?

I have a few bedrooms. The noise from all of them wouldn't let me sleep at night. Every cough , sneeze and snore would wake me.

The a/c makes noise. I wouldn't hear over it even if the doors were all the way open. The noise is prob the bigger problem.

Oooh, honestly I’d invest in a quieter AC... you can get them not so expensive.

We can't really afford to replace any a/c's right now. My kids rooms are also not right near mine.
I thought maybe someone out there has some ingenious idea , but I guess we'll have to rely on the older ones to wake up if the younger ones cry.

Can you put the baby side of the monitor in the hallway outside their room so it only picks up loud noises?

Can you give permission for kids 3 and over to knock on your door at night if they need help?
Babies can't come and get you, but older kids can.
ETA: Teaching independence for sleep is an important thing, worth training. How often do they want you at night?

Hmmm.... I’m not sure 🤔
When my kids were little we had central air and didn’t have this issue
Now that my kids are big (youngest is 8) and our central is broken we put in window units and you’re right, you really can’t hear anything.
Leaving kids door open a drop with a monitor outside their door can help if there’s crying. Also of course tell them that just in case someone has an emergency at night you might not hear them because of the ac so they should come to you.

We have the same problem. We keep our ac on money saver like that it turns on and off. Not ideal since it isn't so cool but it's what we need to do.

We keep ac on but bedroom door open
You say rooms are not right near you and ac is very loud don’t understand the issue just keep door open
You will not hear every little cough from every room like you say.

I think you just need to communicate that they need to come to you if they need you

Since the A/C makes so much noise, you won't hear every cough even if the door is open. Try it, you'll see. Good luck!

It's ok if they cry and you don't hear or come. Nothing will happen. If it's a serious issue, they will likely come out of their rooms, unless they are petrified of you. Try to tell them during the day that the a/c is loud and if they have an emergency to please come knock on your door.
