DS 11 has never been away overnight, but he wants to go to sleepaway camp.
Is there a way to know if he's ready?
Would it be better that he get used to this experience in a more gradual way?

If most kids his age go then it isn't fair to make him different than his class.

Has he ever gone away without you for a week? How did that go?
Would he be going with friends?

My youngest was begging to go at age 9 but he needed an okay from the camp infirmary director because my son was a medically involved preemie and even at age 9, there were concerns. The director was a tzaddik and agreed, even though my son spent lots of time in the infirmary.
The camp had one month for boys and one month for girls and my son came home after his month, disgruntled that the girls came and took over his camp. In his mind, he was entitled to the full summer.
Basically, if the camp is good, the kids want to stay forever.
