The situation has changed, and the person who needed them in the past now feels more independent/resilient.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean - if an activity that the teacher introduced or just the girls amongst themselves?
Here are class activities I enjoyed:
- spot quizzes on English
- building a project on something specific
- teacher randomly chose a girl to teach for like 20 mins. while teacher sat in girl's chair
- last part of lesson dedicated to singing (I love singing, esp. harmony)
- school color war
