We did 2016 because we file with extensions and the money is only available for 4 years, but we are working on 2017 now.

I recently did 2018/19/20. Its not my preference but I had a ridiculous situation with one of my kids birth cert so I could not get an SSN.

You only get refunds for the past three years.

If you paid in money with an extension that money is only valid for 4 years from when it was received.

If you OVERPAID which most people who file so late will do so they don’t incur late payment penalties and interest.

If you did an extension for 2016 that would have been 5 years ago.
No, accountants don't lay out money for customers.

Your accountant may or may not be on top of his three year late deadline list. I advise you to make sure this gets taken care of. The IRS statute of limitations is 3 years not 4. So it’s too late for 2016, due in 2017 - 3 years expired 2020. If you are still waiting on 2017 AND you had a valid extension filed in 2018 you have until 10/15/21 before your overpayment expired.

Edited: assuming your are a US taxpayer. Please disregard if you are inquiring about a different country.

We live in the US.
We had to switch accountants because of corona and he doesn’t have any records etc
Will ask the accountant about this

I feel quite stupid it wasn’t done until now but trying to just push through the discomfort abd do the best we can do now.

No good reason
Accountant probably asked dh for stuff that he didn’t know where it is and never got around to giving him and he never felt the urgency
I knew I should take charge but also didn’t want to.
Now I am.
