Is a $1,000 brand name "automatic" watch that is 5 minutes off every 24 hours, considered a working watch, and something the customer should live with, if its a new watch (6 months old)?

No - obviously - any reason to think otherwise? Assuming a store is giving you a hard time. that would be totally unacceptable in my books.

Yes!
This watch was purchased in the most reputable jewelry store in BP.
They sent it in for repairs. It came back the same way it was originally.
They have a bit of an attitude "We know better".

Such a new watch shouldn’t have to be repaired! You should’ve insisted on a new one!

Nope. Even for a watch half that price or less, I don't consider that acceptable at all.

Absolutely not considered a working watch. It needs to be adjusted. If it’s bought so recent you could send it yourself to the company for a warranty repair only if it’s official merchandise meant for US market. If it’s grey market merchandise (which it may very well be given its place of purchase) well than you don’t have a warranty.

As a store owner- please DONT do a chargeback. Try to call the store again and respectfully ask to speak to the owner or manager and tell them that you truly feel that you were sold damaged goods and want it repaired or replaced. Usually, speaking respectfully will work. If not, you can tell them that if they won’t work with you then you’ll be forced to dispute the charge.
Customers don’t realize that chargebacks cost the stores money. IMHO, most store owners are willing to work things out when asked respectfully.

What does it mean that the watch could be gray goods?
And what does it mean to shop in real stores? What’s not a real store?

Then why are they not standing behind what they sold? This is totally unacceptable

That level of inaccuracy would be unacceptable even for a $25.95 Timex.

A Jewish store that thinks they can get away with not standing behind their products is not a real store. (Well any store that doesn't stand behind their products) but I notice a pattern with frum owned stores and because of that I try not to shop in places like that

Be prepared for the inevitable spinoff: "Frum stores that have given excellent service so please don't bash them all."

A watch like this is worth as much as a wash machine that does everything right until it stops before the spin cycle.
