IyH due to give birth to a boy very soon. We would like to name the baby Yaakov. I was just reading a book and there was a character by the name of Koby - Hebrew name was Yaakov. We both really like both names and we’re thinking to call the baby Koby as a nickname. The only Kobys I’ve ever heard of are secular Israelis though...we live in Lakewood. I know it’s not a typical Lakewood name but that doesn’t bother me. Anyone know any frum Koby’s?

Why on earth would naming a baby "Yaakov" (with any nickname) be a problem?

If Avraham can be Bummy and Yitzchak can be Itchie, why can't Yaakov be Koby?

"Yaakov "Koby" Mandell and Yosef Ishran, were killed on the outskirts of the Israeli settlement of Tekoa in the Israeli-occupied West Bank" (2001)
Not secular. Let his name live on for a blessing!

In Israel I would estimate that half of people named Yaakov go by Koby, and that over half are frum

I live in Lakewood and never heard of a koby here. I also only heard of the name in Israel. I like the name yaakov and wouldn’t change it.

The name Ya'acov has spawned many nicknames in Israel: Koby, Jecky, Yanki, Yaki, Yankele
Koby is a very popular one across all sectors except maybe charedi ones where the Yiddish derivatives are perhaps more common.

Koby is common in the Dati circles, it even goes in the MO circles in the states. Just .
Not sure how many yoh would find in the lakewood circles...

It may not be super common in RW circles but it's not unheard of, either.
I think it's fine!
