My baby was born with a "tag" near her ear. I was told a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist could remove it.
now, at 5 mo old, I went to a dermatologist and was told it's not a tag, but an extra ear!
I'm serious!
he said it's like the beginning of an ear growth that didn't finish. it's just a tiny piece of skin that looks like a tag but he said he wouldn't remove it until she's older -- maybe 4 -- when she could cooperate.
anyone heard of anything like this before??

wouldn't they give her anesthesia? What is there to cooperate if she's sleeping?

I remember once reading that a boy was born with three arms. But never a third ear.

My grandniece was born with an extra piece in front of her right ear and her left ear is hardly there, being very deformed and she most likely has hearing loss in the deformed ear. Her parents, like you, were also told that the 'extra ear' can be removed when she is older. You might want to google 'microtia'.

OP here.
I appreciate having a name to look up. "third ear" did not bring up anything useful on google.
B"H she had 2 normal, functioning ears. the "third ear" is just a little piece of skin that looks like a tag.
they give a shot before removing it - general anesthesia, I believe. He said the shot hurts, that's why they would want to wait until she's older. IMO, I think it would be easier when she's younger and won't understand.... Maybe I should speak to a pediatric specialist....?

There might be other reasons why they want to wait until the child is older. Some facial deformities are corrected only when certain parts of the face/head are done growing and developing and only then can surgery be performed. I would assume that the doctor that recommends doing it at 4 years of age is also a pediatric specialist - a 4-year-old is still in the pediatric category.

my daughter also had an ear tag when she was born. her earlobe of that ear was smaller than the other ear and a little out of shape, like a "w" instead of a u. ppl at the hospital told me that any dr. can just snip it off but it was shabbos so no one was available. a few months later I decided to look into plastic surgery. the tag grew as time went on so it was getting me nervous. we saw a pediatric plastic surgeun who said for sure seh could take off the tag and fix her lobe to have a more regular shape.
she had the surgery at 7 months old, it was outpatient nothing major, 3 days she had a bandage and now her lobe is just a little pink the skin, a minor scar.
I dont know what the details are with your daughter but you should ask your dr about this.
my pediatrician wasnt for it but I didnt want to wait till when she's older and embarrassed of it.

as far as surgery, she had to be put asleep totally, went to robertwood johnson in new brunswick nj cuz very good chidl anesthesiologist there. and she was great.
I think a 4 yr old would be harder to cooperate, they are scared. my 3 yr old had eye surgery and it was a nightmare. but the ear with my baby was really smooth, much easier.

I just looked up auricular tag and got tons of info. there are many different types, some severe, some very minor. also, it depends what tissue is in the tag, how they can remove it.

meanwhile, I couldn't find another dr who takes her insurance.
either a plastic surgeon or a dermotologist.
who takes HIP-medicaid.

My son was born with 2 skin tags and my pediatrician told me to go to a plastic surgeon. He had them removed when he was a couple of weeks old. I went to Helen Colen (or something like that) in a private office in Manhatten. It was 13 years ago. She numbed the area with 2 shots and then sliced them off and stitched the area with self dissolving stitches. A nurse and I held my son down the whole time. It was pretty traumatic for me and my husband but really quick.
I have recently used Dr. Kimmel who accepts medicaid. He is a top plastic pediatric surgeon in Park Slope who accepts medicaid. He works together with Dr. Ari Fleisher, but is sooo much nicer. Maybe call him for a consult. It should be covered by your medicaid. I have americhoice.

My son, now 2, has an ear tag. People said just tie a string but we never did that. When I went to the dermatologist she told me it wont work because what he has is not a true skin tag in that it's small and looks like one, but feels very firm, like there is cartledge in there and since they don't know how deep it goes, it needs to be done surgically.

Not yet. I'd like to but the doctors keep saying wait til he's a little older, a little older.... Meanwhile I think NOW is the time before kids start asking him WHAT'S THAT? So I may have to doctor shop some more.

My brother had one when he was born. The doc tied a string around it and it fell off and now he just has a tiny barely noticeable nub there.

However, the doctor did tell my mom that those tags are associated with liver issues, which he was checked for and B'H everything came out fine.

Then again, this was almost 30 years ago...

I also remember hearing/reading about ear deformities related to other health issues.

Right, you might want to check their kidneys. Ear deformities might indicate kidney issues, since both these organs are formed at the same time.

2 of my kids have small abnormalities on their ears, and I will need to have a kidney sonogram done for them.
