Things, Plural
Eli is still waiting.
Chava feels deflated. The adrenalin that has pulled her through the incident with the guard and defending her role as Mikvah lady has dissipated in Eli's displeasure, and now it all feels like too much.
"Eli, I am not bringing anything up while you're already in a mood like this."
The room is quiet.
Then Eli stands up and walks to the kitchen. Chava waits, unsure if the conversation is over or not.
It isn't.
Eli returns a few minutes later with two mugs of hot cocoa and a small bowl of marshmallows.
"Better mood now," he tells her. "Now spit it out."
Chava looks apprehensively at Eli. He sits down and calmly reaches for a mug, plunking in a few marshmallows. He takes a sip and smiles. Chava is relieved to see that it looks like a real smile.
"I don't bite," Eli says.
"Well, maybe you can switch moods on a dime," Chava answers. "I'm not over things yet."
"That's what the hot chocolate is for."
Chava reluctantly takes her own steaming mug and gazes at the glossy brown liquid. Eli reaches over and drops in a marshmallow. "That should fix it."
Chava gives a small smile and takes a slow slip of the rich chocolate. It does help, although she's not sure if it's the warmth or the sugar or just that Eli brought it for her.
But it comes with a price tag, she knows, and it's not one she feels entirely confident paying yet.
Eli is not saying anything. Chava is still looking into her mug, but she knows Eli is looking at her, at her bruised face, and waiting for her to start talking.
"Resistance is futile."
It's not Eli talking, it's her own mind. She will end up telling him, she knows. And her guilt at not discussing it before is irrelevant. There is no reason not to bring it up now. Even if she feels it necessary to override his opinion, he at least deserves the courtesy of knowing he's been heard.
But how can she even bring it up?
Chava sighs and lifts her eyes from the melting marshmallow.
Eli's gaze is steady. He doesn't look angry.
"Just TALK already!" Chava tells herself fiercely.
She takes a deep breath.
"It was during Kallah classes. Which was always Rebbetzin Cohen. But this time, Rabbi Cohen came together with her. We knew right away something was up."
To be continued...
