My baby is 4 weeks old. He is exclusively formula fed. We started him right away on gentelease because my others have a sensitivity to milk. Well, apparently so does he as after two weeks we got him tested for milk allergies because he was displaying all the symptoms and the test came out positive. Dr. Told us to switch him to either soy or elecare. We tried the elecare, he gagged and threw up after an ounce. (Officially tastes disgusting) We tried a soy based formula since that’s what worked for some of my others and we don’t really have any options left. He takes it relatively nicely but is SO constipated! We tried the thermometer, the leg movements etc. Doctor said to do prune juice and glycerin suppositories. We tried the prune juice and thought we had found the answer. He pooped so much the first day we gave it to him. Since then, nothing. He’s so uncomfortable! The only thing that works for him are the suppositories but he literally can not go without them. And he tries so hard! His little face turns red and the first time he actually pooped, it was as if he was giving birth! (Stools streaked with red blood 😭😭) He grunts all night cuz he’s so uncomfortable. It’s so hard to see him like this!

My questions are:

What bottles worked for your baby? We’re using the Dr. Browns air vent ones now but I feel it’s too fast for him. (The preemie size is too slow)

Anyone have any tried and true methods to get his bowel movements regulated?

If your baby was on elecare, how did you get him to take it?

Thanks in advance!

My baby was on elecare. This was after trying 4 dif formulas and he didn't stop crying from reflux etc. He took it no problem. It resolved his constipation. Elecare is predigested and amino acid based. It's what they give sick children its so light. Neocare as well.

Three of my kids needed elecare and it was disaster with my first. By the next ones I was smarter. I mixed it with apple juice and then they took it. I slowly slowly lowered the apple juice amount until they were used to the formula. I also had been through many formulas before the elecare. It really helped with stomach issues reflux and allergies for me.
Good luck

It seems soy is not agreeing with him. My kids took Neocate which is an amino acid based formula and helped them with all their gi issues.

Also one or two sessions of craniosacral therapy can make a world of a difference, I've learned with my 2 youngest.

Ok it has been proven otherwise but I’m x here to argue with people that didn’t actually look into it and study it.

According to who? Backwards thinking pharma?

Goat milk is very healthy for babies. Formula is full of garbage. The first ingredient in most of them is corn syrup.

Actually, camel’s milk is the closest milk to human milk, molecular structure. Goat’s milk is the runner up.

OP, perhaps try finding a functional doctor.

Giving suppositories is masking the reason why your baby is constipated and you have to get to the root cause.

It can be quite common to have problems with dairy AND soy. My son had this and the only thing that worked normally for him was nutramigen (Israel), poss same as neocate in US? It's like a partially broken down formula. Tastes gross, but as newborns they get used to it and don't know any different.

There is obviously a root cause such inability to digest or stomach over acidity etc. formula aint a root cause, it’s a trigger.

It’s frustrating to see a newborn in distress. I second the suggestion of Neocate. It is specifically geared to babies with intolerance/allergy. Soy and milk are closely related and can both cause problems. Although Neocate is super expensive, being that your baby cannot seem to handle another formula, you may be able to get a prescription from your pediatrician which can get it covered via a insurance and you get it in the pharmacy.
I found Neocate to be THE solution with my allergy prone children. Lot’s of hatzlacha!

I transitioned my baby off breast milk to elecare . We found she was allergic to dairy/soy and she too wouldn't take the elecare. we started mixing small amounts of elecare with my milk (think 1/8 elecare to 7/8 breast milk) to slowly get her used to the taste, it took a few weeks but eventually she took the elecare. hatzlacha
