The Nutcracker ballet itself is very tied to that season but isn’t religious at all. In fact, all the dancing sweets (sugar plums, coffee, candy canes, etc.) make a gift basket theme unto themselves.

Its not a religious story, but it does start at a Xmas party, with a tree, and the nutcracker is a Xmas gift.
