Lots of people conduct their business mostly on WhatsApp. And they're losing out a lot with the outage. I don't have WhatsApp so it's not affecting me personally, but I do know businesses that are personally being affected.

Maybe it’s a dry run of hacker software - pretty successful though if so

That's not possible. Large companies have too many security redundancies to prevent exactly this.
