How about this:
John ties a chain around the case and locks it with a padlock. He sends it over to Mike. Mike unlocks the case and sends it back (it still has the chain on). John unlocks the chain and opens the case.

Or this,

Mike places the key in another suitcase and closes it with a number lock padlock. Sends it over the border to John. Seeing as they obviously can communicate, he tells John the number lock to open. He opens it and retrieves his key.

I know, this answer is too convoluted
