I live in Brooklyn and I want Ds to start piano lessons. He has mild cognitive deficiencies but he is musically inclined. If anyone has someone they personally know to be good that will come to my house please pm me

You didn’t mention your son’s age. You should keep in mind that learning to read music is like learning a new language and alphabet. If he is reading well, then by all means look into it. I am a special Ed teacher and over the years I have taught many students with cognitive delays how to read music. I never start, however, until they can read both Hebrew and English. Remember, in third grade, they also have to learn a new alphabet - Rashi. I am not saying you shouldn’t try, but keep these things in mind.

What Tzippy says is definitely an issue for some kids, but it does not mean that your son can't learn to play piano! If reading is an issue, it is of course possible to learn to play music by ear.

I am a music teacher myself, and I teach everyone first by ear because that is what makes sense to me as a teacher. There are too many physical details to keep up with at first to also be trying to read a new language off the page simultaneously. There is an entire method of teaching music as a language, called the Suzuki Method. Kids learn by ear first, and once they are beginning to understand music as a language, then they start to be introduced to the piece of reading music.

Here is the Suzuki Association website. There is a searchable teacher finder:
https://suzukiassociation.org/

You don't necessarily need a Suzuki teacher, though. You just need a flexible teacher who can adapt their teaching methods to your child's needs.

No recommendation, though. I'm not in NY.

Thank you both for your replies. My son is fluent in English reading and starting to read Hebrew. However, I dont necessarily want him to learn to read notes, especially in the beginning. He has a good ear for picking out tunes and even jazzes his songs up a bit, so learning by ear would be the preferred method for now.
