Something you need to record to accounts that can't be recorded any other way. Like not by payment, credit memo, bill, cc charge etc. By me its like a last resort.

There are adjusting journal entries almost every "end of period" to handle things like accruals and adjustments for prepaid expenses, subscription revenue recognition, depreciation...many transactions
