From a fellow hostess 
I gladly host a lot of neighbors’ guests for their simchas. Now it’s my turn to make the simcha bH. I don’t usually appreciate the serving spoons/tray/etc gifts that people send, it feels like a waste to me, but that’s my personal hangup.
I’d appreciate any and all suggestions of nice gifts to give to the people who are hosting my guests. $15-20 range. What do you like getting?

I hate the little tchachka gifts. hate. hate. hate them. I always feel so guilty throwing out or regifting and then I resent when I just leave it lying around taking up space. like just let me do the favor without the gift!!! but I might be in the minority, because the stores seem to have an awful lot of gift options so I hope someone actually enjoys them!
I enjoy a handwritten personal note and a small candy platter that my kids can enjoy and then I throw out the leftovers with no guilt.

I wish the whole pressure of hostess gifts didn't exist! I'm happy to host company when it works for me.
The gifts we found useful were decorative Havdalah candles (like we actually use them). Candy platters (though we've received some where no one liked that particular candy or chocolate, and they ended up thrown out.) Books. ETA: wine.

Can you get the serving platter from a local place with a gift receipt? Then it can be exchanged for something in their taste.
My SIL returned all and got a magnificent table cloth.
I personally hate the candy and we don’t drink wine.
What about a babka or something nice for everyone for breakfast?

I detest flowers.
What about a cut fruit platter. Not sure the price.
Also, definitely tell them early in the week that you are sending fruit (or cake) before they buy or do the work.

I agree with the above ideas-
New kids book
Havdalah candles
Fresh babka or cake for Shabbos from someone who sells these things
Finger food platter for Shabbos - a small meat board is also nice
Flowers
Wrapped beautifully with a nice note!

Frequent hoster here. I appreciate anything from a local store that I can exchange. Seforim stores and houseware/gift stores always have something I can use. There is a store, called Kitchen Clique I like to buy gifts from. They wrap so pretty, and they sell so many types of things.

I was at a Simcha where they gave the hostesses a small bottle of Walders liquor. I thought that was really nice
