Discuss financials before you get married so you have clear expectations. My husband and I made a conscious choice to live in a cheaper area while many of our friends were living in a certain neighborhood and saved the extra money each month for our down payment. It's a few years later and we were able to buy a house with those savings.

Invest as young as possible
Babies don’t care if they are wearing designer clothing - buy children’s place and invest the difference for them later.
Save for your children starting when they are babies.
If your company has a matching 401k max it out - they are giving you free money.
Not all starter homes are a good deal (ours wasn’t - we may be the only one but for us location wise it was a loss. Years later in a city that is growing - so but wisely)
