Anyone know a doctor that recommends glasses for strabismus before trying surgery? My son is 7 and the dr I went to recommended surgery but I'm not too excited about that especially because I've heard some dr's recommend glasses. If anyone has info I would appreciate it. I live in NY

I had the surgery. Glasses don’t correct the issue they just focus the eyes when it’s worn. I know a few people who were treated with glasses and when they don’t wear it you can clearly see their eyes look funny. My eyes were corrected to 95% which is as perfect as it gets.

Dr. Rubin in New Nanuet is great. Together with glasses he also started vision therapy with my daughter. It helped a lot. My daughter now wears contacts and it’s even better. We were also told first to do surgery but we decided to try this first.

Did surgery a few months ago with Dr. Wisnicki (referred by Refuah Helpline)
Would highly recommend, I am close to 40yrs BTW.
Dr. explained what to expect very well, no pain at all, was just uncomfortable first 2-3 days.

I used glasses for strabismus plus drops that help strengthen the eye muscle. After middle school I did not need glasses anymore, my strabismus was not visible anymore. This was decades ago and the doctor I used retired, but I highly recommend going to a top specialist before considering surgery.

DD also used Wisnicki.
We tried prism glasses and vision therapy but needed surgery anyway.

He really is a mench and tried other approaches before surgery even though he is a surgeon.

What have you been doing until now? In my experience, glasses were recommended until age 5 then surgery but we opted for the surgery right away because it helped in our family before

I took my dc to Dr Wang for a second opinion. He has an office in Manhatten and Westchester. My dc was border line for surgery for a couple of years. Bh glasses did the trick and he is a teen now. I was told that prisms wouldn't work for dc.

I researched surgery and it seems it's not a magical solution. Many people stated that their kids needed to have the surgery twice. I was going to schedule it, but only after going to another Dr first.

Dr. Hal Scwartzstein in Great Neck. He is part of Northwell health. For both my son and daughter he tried glasses before strabismus surgery. Highly recommend him!

Did Dr. Wang prescribe the glasses?

DD has worn glasses since she was 3. We did patching, we did all the exercises, you name it.

Eventually it got to the point where surgery wouldn't work anymore, because her brain does not recognize that eye. She's legally blind on the left.

You've got two things going on here. The weak muscle that lets the eye turn off center, and the brain that gets so confused that it just gives up trying to see out of that eye.

So whatever you decide to do, do it fast!
