Boaz has been a favorite of mine for a long time

I like Boaz too, Noam, Amalya, Moriah, Dina, Tzipora.

I will probably not have that many kids anymore to use up all these names.

Mine are Bas Tziyon and Hodaya

I actually have a Bat Tzion Hodaya.

I'm sorry you feel you can't use the names you love. I'll admit I don't understand why community norms have any bearing on the names YOU choose for YOUR children. Both Bat Tzion and Hodaya were very meaningful for me for this baby and her name brings me nothing but joy.

I live in a community where most everyone goes by rochel, we named our daughter raCHEL, that's how it is pronounced in the torah. so far it has stuck..

Is she in school yet? Teachers in particular tend to pronounce it as Rochel.

I'm called Rachel and it wasn't that big a deal. In elementary school the teachers make sure to get your name right. In highschool they pretty much called us by last names or messed up everyone's first names so I didn't care. Everyone knows me as Rachel, not Rochel.

Lol my name is RaCHEL and I can’t stand when people call me Rochel.

We had to name my oldest Rachel after a family member but I didn't want her to suffer through the Rochel vs Rachel vs Rachel (English way) so we call her Racheli with both pronciations so she doesn't care.

I love love love the name Hentcha. It's an old world polish nickname for the name Chana.
Sadly in my community it would have been considered way, waaay too weird.
But I would have loved to have a little Hentchy. I think in some chasidish circles it's more common..

Wanted a Todros for years, but it's not exactly common.

I also tend to get attached to names when I hear something special about their meaning or history.
Shulamis
Alexander

And a long list of special people I would in theory name after but I doubt I'm destined to have quintuplets six times in a row.

I never heard of Todros being a Jewish name? Which community uses it?
I pretty sure I’ve only heard it used by Copts or Greek Orthodox

Funny how the grass is always greener...
Henchy isn’t a very common name though it’s heard often enough in the chassidish community but it’s like a name that many pple dislike. They name it cuz the grandmother was named like that and for many it isn’t a choice not to name it, but it’s definitely on the “ yunchy name ” list.
I guess names that I like that aren’t acceptable in my community might be considered nerdy in other circles.

This thread makes me very sad.
Shouldnt parents be allowed to name their kids whatever they want? With no pressure from their parents or the community?

If I love a name I use it. I live in a mixed community so most names go.

I love the names Avital, Shmaya, Shmaryahu, Yehosheva, Akiva, Avishai, Shaindel, Azaryah, Yedidya. Some of those DH doesn’t like and some I’m not sure if my kid would feel weird having. Speaking as someone who grew up with an atypical name, I want my kids to have the option to distinguish themselves if they want, but not feel like “standing out” was forced upon them.

that's not really the issue. At least for me personally. I would have less of an issue to name what I like than the fact that my child will have a (relative to my community) weird or unusual name. I wouldn't want to do it to them.
