What would be the Hebrew translation of the name Freidel or Freida?

Simcha.

I know a few Simcha Freidas

As a Yiddish speaker, freid means happiness, joy.

According to Google Freida means peace from the German origin. For some reason the Yiddish one on Google is spelled Frayda, meaning joy.

(Also I asked a Gadol and he said its the same as Aliza and Gila).

My grandmother - she should live to 120 - is Fraida, meaning joy. I think Aliza is the closest Hebrew name for that, and none of her grandchildren have used the name.

Why wouldn't you simply use Freidel? I always wonder why people look for Hebrew 'equivalents'. The name just isn't the same.

So many pretty names to choose from.
The Fraidels I know are mostly Aliza and Chedva but I know one Ditza.
Simcha has the same meaning as Fraidel but in Ashkenaz circles it's usually a boy's name. I know a couple of Sephardi women Simchas and one girl Simcha in a Yekke family.

Chedva Fraida is a common name.

My Israeli cousin and I (American) are named after the same grandmother. She goes by Gila and I go by Frayda.

In my case we prefer to go by Hebrew names. We don’t speak Yiddish. To us Yiddish is no more holy a language than English. So I add a Hebrew equivalent on to the Yiddish name. They Hebrew name (as named with an Aliyah to the Torah) is both but they go by the Hebrew.

It means joy. So Gila, Rina, Ditza, Chedva etc are all common alternatives. Aliza and Simcha are also used.

1. If it's considered a "strange" name in specific circles, parents would not want their child to be made fun of.

2. Some people are makpid to only use hebrew names.
