Kind of looking into this field. I don't have time or resources for a college degree at the moment, so I'm looking into things like YouTube tutorials and the occasional bootcamp. Has anyone done this successfully? Any tips?

My husband tried self-teaching for months
He even tried a program with a mentor, but you read and learn the material yourself.
It was all a waste of time and money.
He ended up taking Avrumy Friedman's full-stack programming course remotely (af lives in Lakewood.) It was totally worth it - less than 10k and finished in 9 months.

Is 9 mos considered average, or quicker than usual? Was he able to get a job?

from learning his first line of code, to getting his job - was just under a year!

I can ask him, but I think he started learning basic html and css, then moved on to javascript and react, python.

he used w3 schools, youtube tutorials..

9 months is considered average for a boot camp. I got a job right after taking the same one - avrumi Friedman's course lakewoodprogramming.com.
There are other pretty good boot camps out there as well - full stack academy, general assembly...

My daughter did a 9 month online boot camp with bloc. (part time - full time is quicker) It cost something under $10,000, less for women, and they guarantee your money back if you don't get a job within 6 months.

She has a job now she is very happy with.
