My in laws used to buy gifts. Then the grandchildren numbers grew and she started giving money. Much better for me. And then I pick what the toy is. Quality, type, etc.

So far I do, because so far bH I can afford it. At some point I’ll quit I suppose. Probably when I retire and am living on pension and savings. My kids are 30 and up and for all I know some of them make more than dh and I do.

There’s no Halacha about this. Some people quit when their kids have kids and they give to the grandchildren instead. Whatever suits you and your budget.

My in laws five check to each family and ask parents to use some money toward something for kids.
My parents give money seperate to couple and grandchildren.

Some years my mother in law gave couples and kids own gift (like towels, tablecloth, travel mugs, books, cds) but as the family grew it became more complicated.

$150 form parents, $200 from in-laws (sometimes different, depending on circumstances). kids get anywhere from $2-$20 depending on age.

dont forget, parents dont owe their children anything. anything we get is a "bonus" and very much appreciated.

I get $100 from parent and $100 from in-laws. Parents also sponsor a chanuka dinner at a restaurant for the family.
