Just wondering - if you order things like cardigans, pullovers, coats online, like on Amazon or Shein, do you have everything checked?
I order only things that do not contain wool according to label, to avoid the problem, but 2 or 3 "acrylic" items I got recently smell as if they contain wool, different from the rest. And they have connective stitching with a different thread which could be anything.
What does "everyone else" do?

I only check items that say contain wool or linen. If that if it's a very cheap item with very little wool content from china the chances of them using wool is slim. Sometimes I call shatnez lab in williamsburg about a product containing wool to see if needs to be checked

Only items that say "wool" (any %) on the label.
