Did you write a good poem and want to inspire others?

I teach poetry and am looking to read good samples to my students. I'm on the lookout for poems written by 'regular' writers, not by professionals.

If you don't mind, please share a poem you've written, any and all topics appreciated!

Not sure what age your students are, if this is what you had in mind Smile
I wrote this as my child was going through difficult cancer treatments. (I had struggled with depression earlier in my life.)

Joy In A Cancer Ward

I did not think it possible
I would not have believed if I had not seen it with my own eyes-
Felt it with my own heart.
Can Joy really exist in the face of Pain?
Can the sun shine in the blackest storm?
It is impossible.
An oxymoron.
A total dichotomy.
But I saw it-
I felt it.
It was not a joy that was forced.
It was not denial.
It was Real
Pure
Joy.
I saw fear
I saw pain
I saw agony
I saw terror.
But I also saw hope
I saw gratitude
And I saw happiness.
How?
I realized then I was wrong all this time...
I had spent my life peering up at the sky waiting for the sun to shine.
I would see the clouds, hear the crash of thunder-
There was no sun.
I would wait
And wait
For the sun to break through.
I thought that when the sun would finally shine, only then would it bring
Its Joy
Its Warmth
Its Love.
I waited still-
But all I saw was clouds,
There was no joy.
All I heard was thunder,
There was no warmth.
So I resigned myself to live in a world
Of pain.
Lonely,
And cold.
But I was wrong.
I saw it there, in the coldest, darkest of places.
Pockets of sunshine.
How could they exist in this place?
How could they shine so strong?
Because it is not the sun that pushes away the clouds to let its light shine through.
It is up to me.
Wherever I am,
Whatever is storming around me,
I alone have the power to pull out the pockets of sunshine.
I alone can choose
To bask in its warmth-
Or to ignore it.
To unveil its brilliance as it washes over me-
Or To leave it untouched beneath the layers of gloom.
The pockets of sunshine were here the whole time.
And if I can find them now, I can find them forever.
Now I know
That they are everywhere.
Waiting to be discovered.
And while it may sound crazy,
I have found joy in a cancer ward.

It's precisely what I had in mind.
It's for 11th graders.

This poem is so well written! I'm crying and so amazed at your strength! And the message is so powerful!
Thanks for sharing and may you see only happy days from here on!

Everywhere I go
I see your ghost
Our ghost
The ghost of
Who we used to be

Bunkhouses
Where I stood outside
Watching you sleep
Waiting
For you to keep your promise
In vain

Letters where
I gifted you
The shattered pieces of my heart
Only to have you
Impossibly
Break them even more

Calvin Klien perfume
On my shelf
Bringing me back
To frigid mornings
Traveling beside you
Breathing it in
Breathing you in
Breathing in
Those rare moments we shared

Train tracks
That once passed your house
The balcony where
You pulled me out of
Deep dissociation
Thought I didn’t know that word back then
The stoop where
We stood for hours
Discussing matters
That felt very important
At the time

The beach where
We sat
Holding hands
Sifting through sand
As the time we had together
Was slipping through
Our fingers
The park where
Late at night
You laid your head
On my shoulder
And a sweetness
I could not describe
Washed over me

The car where
I saw you
For the first time
Since you ran
And disappeared
Looking different
Speaking in
A strange accent
But it didn’t matter
Because I thought I had lost you
Yet here you were
Scraping off red nail polish
“From Purim”
You said

The corner where
We met up
Clandestinely
After I was warned
Repeatedly
To stay away
You all gothic and dangerous
Cars with boys
In pink shirts
Driving by
Catcalling you
Me
Shrinking away
Afraid
Afraid of following
Of becoming you

The couch where
I felt safe
For the first time
In a very long while
And you discovered
Who you were
Sensing each others
Raw pulsing
Anguish
Terror
Despair
Making it all better
Healing our wounds
Together

We once were so connected
And now we are
Strangers
acquaintances at best
Maybe you follow me on Instagram
Maybe I see your whatsapp status
Or maybe
You have no online presence at all
And so I have no idea
Who you are
Anymore

But my heart
Remembers
In my past
You are still
That person
You were then
When I knew you
When you knew me
You are still holding up
That me
From back then
And for that
And so much more
I am grateful

I have many. Here's one I wrote in sem:

Upon its lithe and lovely stem
Swaying gently in the delicate breeze
Its petals locked in an inward grasp
Hiding away from prying eyes.

It peeks through its gossamer petals
Now glowing from the sunshine
And gasps at its own beauty
And ever more tightly curls itself.

Other flowers, gaudy bright
Fling open their arms to the warmth
And bob their heads to all passing
Vain in the admiration.

The flower sees their gorgeousness
And sees the joy they generate
It wonders if its subtle beauty
Would elicit admiration.

Then in a moment of determined act
Throwing away its timidity
It uncurls itself and begins to share
Its sweetness with all the world.

It takes the sunlight, the liquid gold
And transforms it to cascading silk.
Seemingly effortless, but I know-
For I too am a flower.

I used to be the angel
I used to be the one
The one to raise my hand
The one to understand
The one to stand with pride
And keep trouble far away
The struggles are my own
Yet they are all to blame
And I hang my head in shame
But I was once the angel
And perhaps I yet may be

This won a national honorable mention when I was in 6 grade:

Leaning from the window
I take a peek
Hoping to see
The mountains I seek

Looming and zooming
As far as the eye can see
Are the mountains who share
Secrets with me

For no one but we
Seem to know
The secret of what
Makes the mountains glow

When the sun sets over the hill
It seems to spill
Its most beautiful rays
I know for I have seen it
Many days

Looming and zooming
As far as the eye can see
Are the mountains who share
Secrets with me.

Wow!

Amothers Brickred and Snowdrop! Thank you so much!!! I love your writing style!

Brickred, Is this something you really went through with a close friend? That's so painful!

Snowdrop, perfect in every way! I'll use this one tomorrow as it's lighter and exactly what I needed for tomorrow's lesson.

Can't wait to use the other 2 as well! They're beautiful and written with lots of emotions which makes it a very interesting read! The messages are powerful and inspiring!

I have written poems, but wouldn't want to have them bc I've shared in real life, and don't want ppl to know I am on ima.

If you post with your screenname, if PM you, but I don't want them "out". Hoping to publish some one day

This poem on a plaque I wrote to thank good friends who helped our family after we lost
we had a fire and they hosted us for meals for a couple of months:

In less than an hour
The flames our home did devour
Our belongings were gone
How can we go on?

Avrahom* and Sara* rushed to our side
Their hearts opened wide
You re-opened your store
Gave us clothing and towels galore

A four course meal every night
Each one a culinary delight
Every Shobbos Seuda
Was me'ein Olam Habah

Eli** and Tova** also pitched in
They helped with a grin
They see your chessed every day
They follow in your way

Avrahom and Sora, you are more than friends
You helped another
Like a sister and brother

Hashem should you bless
With Parnassa, Gezunt and Nachas
But the true reward for all you have done
Will be in the World To Come.

* not their real names

** their children

Was inspired by the description of sunset on the mountains
in the book "Heidi".

My DH and I used to have a cellular accessory business.
And we wrote a Thank You Poem, to our salesman that we bought from.

To our friend Jack
Who owned the Sweet Shack
Who never complains
That we get on his back

Eliot is so nice
We always get the best price

If we need an order in a hurry
Jack says not to worry
He will make Danny
Get off his Fanny

So Happy Purim, Jack

You are the sweetest guy
At E.S.I.
You do a great job
Thank you!
Best Bubby and Bob [my DH]

TEFILLAS GESHEM

Her tears fall
The rain she has prayed for
So intently.
L'bracha Velo L'klalah
And a million voices strong,
AMEN.

A fire burns
In your soul
Radiating warmth
That attracts
Light
That illuminates

Like a siren song
People follow you
Without knowing why
Or how

Inexplicably
There is something
In your dancing eyes
In your smile
For everyone
You come across

Watching you
Is like watching
An animal
In their natural habitat
Beautiful
Yet not to be caged
Not to be tamed

You were born
To be wild and free
To love you
Is to let you go
Let you be
