I have an older teen with ASD. The last time I saw this movie I was younger than he is now, and I didn't know what autism was. I remember the movie making me uncomfortable, and writing off everything Raymond said as gibberish or savant. But now, I see the growth. I see the triggers. I see his brother doing the best he can, and really, so well in so many ways. And I see the ending, where each choice is a major sacrifice in terms of Raymond's growth and life.

And I don't know what will be with my kid. Which behaviors and patterns will just be with him despite our efforts. Which intervention, which are overall good, will inevitably sacrifice some important skills. Which choices I will make right or wrong, or have made right or wrong, and whether I can correct the wrong ones at all.

I am so wrecked.

My sister has an autistic son.

1. Very important - get legal guardianship so that you are guardian after son turns 18.

If you don't get this, corrupt DOE might claim your son "decided" he doesn't want to go to school
anymore and deny him services.

2. Contact Ohel for information about group homes. There are long waiting lists.

3. Most important skills are GOOD BEHAVIOR - not aggressive, follow orders, not running away,
not being very loud

4. And Independent Life Skills: going to bathroom independently, showering, dressing, eating
being able to entertain oneself with toys or listening to music or watching tv.
