I am very reluctant to get Whatsapp on my phone because there are a few people I dont want to know I have it.
Is there a way to block them without them knowing that I blocked them if my number is in their contacts?

I'm not sure, but you can join Whatsapp with a different number (eg Google Voice).

you can block them, but they will be able to see under your name in their contacts that you have it. I dont think theres a way to block them from seeing you have it. but I could be wrong.

Probably your best bet because even if you block someone, they can still see if you have WhatsApp. They just can’t message you or see your online status.

They won't see automatically, but if you really don't want them to know, make a new Google Voice number and use that for your Whatsapp number.
