I love cholent with oxtail, but it got too expensive these days, and I need something more meaty for my family as everyone get bigger.

For seasoning I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, dried onion, sweet paprika, smoked paprika and a bit of turmeric.
Then a squeeze of ketchup and mustard

My husband loves the flavour smoked bones add

Never heard of that… how much do you put in?

Depends on the size of the cholent...we make for shul so an 18 quart crock pot gets a full bottle...for the house cholent- let's say an 8 qt crock pot would go with a third of the bottle- probably about 2/3 of a cup. It really adds an extra dimension to the cholent consistency and taste.

Baked beans. I also start off by “frying”my meat, bones, and onions in the spices I use for about an hour or two on high in the crockpot before adding beans and barley and kishka.

We spice with salt, pepper, garlic powered, lots of paprika, smoked paprika, chili powder, and lots of Montreal steak seasoning (read that in a cookbook I think). We also add a squirt of honey.
I’m not a huge fan of cholent but my kids like it and they’re picky Smile

Do you have or know of a secret ingredient that takes the cholent to the next level?

I know of people putting almost everything edible like jam, dates, soy sauce, coffee etc.

Our cholent is quite traditional and I want to hear if there's something that can upgrade it!

Oil. Alot of it. It changes the entire taste and texture.
