Thanks so much for these good ideas! I’m going to work off of these lists. I don’t know how people have time to cook like this regularly! It’s like Shabbos every day. But I’m going to try to do it.

For those who wondered what American food is, so I’ll tell you that some of my kids’ favorite suppers are fajitas, chili and cornbread, tacos, and pizza. To me that’s American food, but maybe others would disagree?

Exactly! I mean I know my food is really heimish and Hungarian but I'm curious what "Yeshivish" means in food...

So the part that confuses me is that I always thought heimish food is home style food. Now it means Chassidish food?

OP, I think your guest will be more excited to eat something different than what they're used to. Unless they're kids/picky eaters, I wouldn't change my cuisine. Stick with what you're comfortable.

I don’t consider it chassidish food only. It’s traditional ashkenazi food. Some people in my extended family cook like this, others don’t. There are plenty of yeshivish people eating like this and it’s delicious and comforting.

Synthy I want them to feel at home and know they don’t really care for American food. I don’t mind cooking different for a bit.

Fajitas, chili, tacos to me is Mexican food.

American food would be hotdogs, bbq steak, burger sandwiches, fries, coke, apple pie, maybe grilled chicken salad, mac & cheese (originally Italian ), pizza, also originated from Italy, meatballs & spaghetti maybe originally italian or Mexican.

Heimish has two definitions-it's the Yiddish word for homemade.
It is also used to refer originating from Hungary or Chassidic roots, even if currently not Chassidish.

There are also traditional food coming from Poland or Russia which might be slightly different than the Hungarian foods, even if they are both Eastern European.

Chili and fajitas were invented in America - from cowboys driving cattle to market thousands of miles in the old days, near the Mexico-Texas border. The tacos most Americans make (not counting Spanish-speaking Americans) aren’t anything like the tacos you find outside of the U.S. so I consider them a solidly American food too. Taco Tuesday is a very American thing (and great marketing strategy).

How old are your guests? Do they live in America? For older generation I understand maybe they only eat their traditional foods that they are used to, but if they are young living here, even if they are Chassidish they probably integrate a mixture of old time food & newer inter-cultural current food trends.

Sunday my family had leftovers from shabbos so those were mostly traditional/European
Monday we had schwarma spread so Israeli
Tuesday we had taco spread so American/Mexican

My guests are in their 60s and live in America but not into food trends at all. They live in a beautiful simple neighborhood and live a beautiful 100% Torahdikke life that I admire. I would feel shwarma or tacos is too casual for them even though I personally do like those foods.

Just prepare a 9x13 pan with chicken legs with rice underneath.

A pan of sliced potatoes with minute steak baked on top.

Make 2 large vegetable soups and switch off each night.

OP- you can make 4 different types of soup in big batches and freeze
This leaves the main dish and dessert
Dessert is store bought and/or pre-cut fruit
So that leaves the main to cook fresh every day
Prep early morning or the night before
Try to make simple sheet pan meals even if it doesn’t sound heimish

Salmon with stringbeans and sweet potato
Chicken with potatoes and zucchini roasted in one big pan
Burgers French fries and corn on the cob
Meat lasagna with roasted broccoli on the side
Chicken and rice cassarole add peas and carrots (frozen) inside

I do not know how many days you will host for
Plus things like tacos or chili will be totally acceptable if the meal starts with soup and ends with dessert

This is my opinion

Oh and if they are older they may not eat that much

Thank you for these good ideas.

Ra_mom, how do you make the chicken and rice taste good and the rice not come out either crunchy or mushy? (I tried it a few times but it never worked for me.) How do you season the minute steak and potatoes, and do you cover it? I don’t like to use soup mix if possible.

ETA I had some sheet pan supper failures too so I’m scared of them. Something always seems to get overdone or even burned. I don’t know why!
