If I dont want solid walls (I like a subtle mix of colors in some pattern or abstract design) and I dont like wallpaper, whats "in" and practical for transitional style elegant entrances, living/dining rooms?

I recently saw some really cool patterns/stenciling you can do with paint. Also, there are paints that can be sponged onto the wall for a textured look. I'll try to attach links

Eta: too hard to attach
Search on Pinterest:
"Paint stencils for walls"
"Textured metallic paint"

In some of my rooms I did a neutral wall with a bold color for the trim rather than white. It really came out nice.

Thanks, I saw that but everything on their instagram page was only 1 color per wall.

Whenever I had wallpaper, sooner or later seams opened. And the real practical wallpapers look plastic-y.

You can get wallpaper with very subtle patterns that just give a pop of interest to a wall -

I have no idea whether this is your taste as I picked it at random but with wallpaper you don't have to worry about the skill of the "painter" as you know exactly what the results will be

Also many people just do one dramatic accent wall - whether it be a very unusual color or a boldly patterned wallpaper.
