In high school my father took us skiing every winter. Sometimes on a plane ride, like to Colorado, and sometimes more local like Vermont. We also went to California to visit grandparents. Most girls in my school went away during mid winter, but I went to Manhattan high school. I’m 32.

I grew up in Europe and we would do low cost road trips, staying bed and breakfast type places in different parts of Europe and the UK. I have wonderful memories of these trips.

I also remember only one girl from my class going to Florida on winter break. It wasn't the norm back then.
What was the norm was having winter break at the same time as the public schools, which meant my mom had the same vacation days we kids had. We would spend a day in the city, but that was about it.
Now, DH and I both have our winter breaks the last week of December, and yeshiva break has always been an issue.
But my kids are grownand don't resent the fact that we only had/have family vacations in the summer.
I didn't go to Florida until I was in college, and honestly, I wasn't impressed. I've had so much more fun in many other locales without the huge crowds.
